Tapawera Area School caters for the education of students from 5 years old all the way through to the end of high schooling. The school works strongly to function as one school but for many activities secondary and primary work in different ways and spaces.
Tapawera Kindergarten is also onsite, located in one of the primary classrooms. It is a separate entity but we do work together to link learning and ensure smooth transition of Early Childhood Education into Primary schooling.
Being a rural school means our programmes have a particular flavour at times and strong connections with our local environment and the opportunities that environment provides. Tapawera Area School was established in 1942 as the ‘Consolidated School’ which was formed through the closure and combining of a number of small primary schools across the region. Later it became a District High School and then finally an Area School.
Many of our students travel a good distance to attend using the services of Wadsworth Motors School Bus Services. A service which is still going strong after 100 years.
Our primary classes tend to be much smaller than town schools giving students opportunity to form closer learning relationships with teachers. Our high school classes are much smaller than those found in large secondary schools but with all the same opportunities and resources. We work hard to ensure equivalent or better opportunities for students.
Reminder Tabloids tomorrow.
Bring your house colours in your bag, a towel as students will get wet.
We encourage parents/whanau to come along and be apart of the afternoon. 1:30pm till the end of the day.

Kia ora and welcome,
What I have just said to you in Manx and in Te Reo is welcome, where I am from, which is a
small island country called the Isle of Man, directly opposite NZ on the other side of the
world with a population of around 60,000, around the same as Nelson!
I moved to NZ in 2002, after teaching PE and English for 15 years in London and the Isle of
man, with my wife and 3 children, and we lived in Rangiora, North Canterbury for 14 years
and I worked at Kaiapoi High School in many different roles and ending up as Deputy
Principal.
I then became Principal at Murchison Area School in 2016 before coming here to Tapawera
at the start of this year to assist with the running of this kura.
I am sport mad, play numerous sports still-including football, volleyball, golf and cricket and
spend the rest of my time enjoying fishing and relaxing in the Marlborough Sounds!
I come to this school promising you that I will do everything I possibly can to make this
school and you students have every opportunity that you possibly can.
I do not value one subject over another be they traditional academic subjects or vocational
subjects; they are both as valuable. What I strive for is to give each one of you the
opportunity to succeed in whatever pathway you wish to follow, be happy and feel safe and
welcome here at our school.
From that excellence will follow in whatever aspect of your life you enjoy.
I will pull you up on things when I do not believe you are giving it your best effort, be that
from work to uniform or general interactions with others but this is because I believe you
can do better and should do better.
I look forward to getting to know you better in the coming weeks and months and
supporting your great staff in making this kura great again.
On behalf of myself and all the other new staff and students here today, I thank you for your
welcome.
