Tapawera Area School is embedding Restorative Practice into everyday school life.
Restorative Practice is an approach that views relationships as central to the well-being of the school community. Rather than just focusing on rules, its primary purpose is to build, maintain, and repair relationships. The ultimate aim is to create a safe, supportive school community where all members feel they belong and can achieve their full potential. A core belief of this approach is that decisions are best made with people, rather than to or for them.
How Does it Work?
When things go wrong, the restorative process seeks to repair harm and restore relationships by bringing those involved together for a "Restorative Conference". This guided conversation helps everyone understand the situation and find a positive path forward.
What This Means for Our Students
By learning and using this process, our students will develop valuable skills in communication, empathy, and problem-solving. They will be supported in taking responsibility for their actions and understanding the impact they have on others in a constructive way. We are confident that this approach will strengthen our school culture and help our students build positive, lasting relationships. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.
